For years the safe choice in furniture was white, grey and pale oak. Brown is back. Pantone named a soft brown, Mocha Mousse, its Colour of the Year for 2025. Dark timber is the furniture that colour belongs on.
Dark timber is not new to Triple J's floor. Here are the pieces in deep brown finishes that are in stock now, and how to bring the colour in without the room going heavy. Prices are as listed on 20 October 2026.
Mahogany, in three browns
The Amsterdam range is solid kiln-dried mahogany, hand made in Indonesia. Most pieces come in Chocolate, Mahogany or Light Pecan, so you can go as dark as you like.
- Amsterdam 2 drawer coffee table, $504, fully assembled.
- Amsterdam 2 drawer bedside table, $397, fully assembled.
- Amsterdam 5 drawer tallboy, $1,353, with metal drawer runners. Anchor it to the wall; the page says so too.
- Amsterdam 1 drawer sofa table, from $306.
The Dynasty buffet is solid mahogany in Mahogany or Chocolate, with two doors and four drawers, for $1,007. It comes fully assembled.
Walnut with stone: brown that feels light
Dark timber next to a pale stone top keeps a room bright. In the Cotswold bedroom, the walnut bed carries the colour and the bedside table carries the light: a pale, travertine-look stone top sitting on dark walnut drawers.
- Cotswold bed, $1,385 in queen, in walnut.
- Cotswold bedside table, $520, walnut with a travertine-look stone top and felt-lined top drawers.
Walnut with brass: brown that looks new
The Arlo range is mango wood in a walnut finish with brass accents. It reads modern rather than traditional.
- Arlo round coffee table, $489, with a curved slatted base. Fully assembled.
- Arlo TV unit, $595. Fully assembled.
The Gatsby queen bed is solid white cedar in a walnut finish, with solid timber slats, for $1,263.
Brown that is not timber
If a whole timber piece is too much, start smaller. A chocolate fabric chair or a pair of walnut legs brings the warmth of brown into a room without the weight of a big dark sideboard or dining table.
- Bruno swivel accent chair, $438, in a textured chocolate fabric with a curved split back.
- Monetti dining chair, from $304, in beige fabric on walnut legs.
- Scandinavian bar stool, $216, solid mahogany, fully assembled.
How to use dark timber
- One dark piece per room first. A coffee table or a bedside is enough to change the feel.
- Keep the walls pale. Brown timber looks richest against white or cream.
- Pair it with stone or brass. The Cotswold and Arlo ranges are built that way.
- Match the browns, not the timbers. Chocolate mahogany and walnut sit well together; a cool grey timber beside them looks out of place.
